INSTRUCTIONS: The TMA consists of eight questions and it worth 20% of the total grade assigned to the course. It will be graded out of 100 marks divided amongst the seven questions. In your answers, please be sure to show all your calculations and to submit copies of your output when asked to use MS Excel or any other software/source.

Question1: (15 points)

Each manager of a corporation was rated as being either a good, fair, or poor manager by his/her boss. The manager's educational background was also noted. The data appear below:

a) What are the two variables under study? And what are their types?

b) What charts could be used to display the manager ratings? Justify your answer.

c) Use MS Excel to construct a chart that displays managers’ educational background.
A proper chart must contain (title, labels for axes, frequencies, ledgers, percentages……)

d) If we randomly select one manager from this company, find the probability that he or she has an advanced (Master's or Ph.D.) degree and is a good manager.

e) What is the probability that a randomly chosen manager has earned at least one college degree?

Question 2: (20 points)

The following data reflect the number of potential customers who test drove new cars each day for a sample of 12 days at the Redfield Ford Dealership

a) Calculate the mean and median number of daily potential customers. What can you say about the skewness of the data set? Justify your answer.

b) Would any of the given numbers be considered an outlier? Justify your answer.

c) Determine the sample standard deviation.

d) Consider below the boxplot of the given data, comment on its skewness.


e) If only 25% of the potential customers who register for a test drive purchase new cars, estimate the number of customers who purchased new cars in the above 12 working days.

Question 3: (12 points)

A psychologist determined that the number of sessions required to obtain the trust of a new patients is either 1, 2, or 3. Let X be random variable indicating the number of sessions required to gain the patient's trust. The following probability function has been proposed.

a) What is the expected number of sessions?

b) What is the standard deviation of the number of sessions?

c) Determine the Cumulative Distribution Function?

d) What is the probability that it takes exactly 2 sessions to gain the patient's trust?

e) What is the probability that it takes at least 2 sessions to gain the patient's trust?

Question 4: (15 points)

Among all the workers at an assembly plant, the amount of time needed to assemble a digital camera (X) is a normally distributed random variable with mean μ = 12 hours and standard deviation σ = 2.4 hours.

a) What is the probability for a randomly selected digital camera to be assembled in less than 9 hours?
b) If the time that a worker takes to assemble a camera is among the longest 1% of all assembly times, the worker must submit a report to the supervisor explaining why the assembly process took so long. What is the minimum assembly time required for the time to be included among the longest 1% of all assembly times?

c) If 11 digital cameras are randomly selected, what is the probability of the sample mean of time taken to be assembled to exceed 14 hours?

Question 5: (10 points)

A random sample of 240 people was asked if they have a retirement plan, and 66 replied that they did not have a plan. Based on the sample data, determine the 95% confidence interval for the population proportion of people not having a retirement plan and interpret the computed interval.

Question 6: (10 points)

A random sample of 16 hotels in Dubai had an average nightly room rate of $165.40 with a sample standard deviation of $21.70. Find the 90% confidence interval for the population mean of nightly room rate and interpret the computed interval.

Question 7: (12 points)

The NCAA is interested in estimating the difference in mean number of daily training hours for men and women athletes on college campuses. The sample results are:

a) Check the assumption of common variance.

b) Find the pooled estimate of the common variance.

c) Calculate the 90% confidence interval for the difference in mean number of daily training hours for men and women.


Question 8: (6 points)

Recently, a marketing research company reported that based on a random sample of 20 households the mean number of trips to a major shopping mall per month per household is 4.12 trips and a standard deviation of 0.8 trips.

Use MS EXCEL (Interactive Sheets on moodle) or any other open source (online) to construct the 95% confidence interval estimate for the population mean.
