Part I: Theoretical Concepts (30 Marks)
Question 1: 15 Marks
a) Explain in your own words the Power-Law response phenomenon of common CRT devices. How is gamma correction achieved for such devices? (6 Marks)

b) Apply the Power-Law (Gamma) intensity transformation to the given image A1 and provide the resultant image. Assume c=1 and gamma=0.5 as the parameter values. (9 Marks)

Question 2: 15 Marks
a) Write the general equations that show that the Fourier Transform and its inverse are periodic in nature. (6 Marks)

b) For the 1-D Fourier Transform case, provide the mathematical procedure that will enable you to center the Fourier Transform in the interval [0, M-1]. (9 Marks)


Part2: Matlab Part (50 Marks): You must submit your matlab code as a .m matlab function well commented. Also you must submit all figures and relevant images as part of your work.
Question 3: 50 Marks
This part of the TMA is concerned with performing image contrast enhancement operations using the Matlab software package. For this purpose a Bird image has been provided with this TMA.

Perform the following operations on the Bird image:
a) Read the given image into your Matlab environment. Covert the image to grey scale image and plot it. (5 Marks)
b) Reduce the size of the grey scale image to 400x400 by using ‘bicubic’ interpolation method and plot the reduced size image. (5 Marks)
c) Plot the Histogram of the reduced-size grey-scale image. (4 Marks)
d) Apply 3 Contrast Enhancement techniques available in Matlab to the reduced-size grey-scale image and plot the output images. (3*4 marks)
e) Plot on the same figure and compare the Contrast Enhanced (CE) output images to the reduced-size grey-scale image. You should provide 3 plots for the 3 comparisons. What is the effect produced by the 3 techniques that is evident from the output images? Provide brief explanation. (3*4 Marks)
f) Plot on the same figure and compare the Histograms of the CE output images to the Histogram of the reduced-size grey-scale image. What is the effect produced by the 3 techniques on the Histograms of the output images? Provide brief explanation. (3*4 Marks)

Part3: Critical Analysis of Image Processing based Research Article (20 Marks):
Question 4: 20 Marks
Consider the research paper by P. Agrawal et. al. provided with this TMA:
‘Text Extraction from Images’.
Answer the following in your own words:
a) Briefly explain why the authors feel that text extraction from images is an important task in multi-media applications.
b) Describe briefly the effect of the existence of any complex background in images on accuracy of the Text Extraction system.
c) Why do the authors feel that image pre-processing is important for the accuracy of the Text Extraction system. List the four steps implemented by the authors in this regard.
d) What are some of the applications that authors have suggested for their Text Extraction system.
